Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for the AIIMS hospital in Thoppur, Madurai at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore. The Prime Minister said that high quality medical treatment will be provided to Tamil Nadu people through AIIMS hospital.

Governor Panwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Palaniswamy, Deputy Chief Minister O.Pannirselvam, Ministers and BJP executives gave a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Madurai Airport by car to Mandela Nagar where the festivities were held. On the stage, the Chief Minister Palaniswamy welcomed the Prime Minister Modi and gave the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Statue as a memorial gift.
The Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. O. Panneerselvam gave a welcome speech at the ceremony and thanked Prime Minister Modi for accepting Jayalalitha's request to set up AIMS hospital in Tamil Nadu.
The people of the southern district will benefit from the AIIMS hospital in Madurai, said Mr. Panneerselvam. Chief Minister Palaniswami said that Tamil Nadu is the forerunner to other states by various health schemes brought by Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu. The Chief Minister thanked the Prime Minister for the AIIMS project in Tamilnadu and called for a medical college in a drought district Ramanathapuram.
Following the speech of the Chief Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the AIIMS hospital in Thoppur via video conference, opened the multi-purpose clinic in Madurai, Thanjavur and Nellai and started passport service centers at 12 post offices.
